The title of the retrospective establishes an ideal continuity and a form of mirroring with the territorio dell’architettura (territory of architecture) – the programmatic title of his first book published in 1966 – a meeting place for contributions from other experiences and disciplines, in which the term territory conveys the meaning of the overall physical and conceptual material for architecture itself.
“A complete project” Gregotti e Associati
November 13 2018 – January 27, 2019
Garagem Sul, Centro Cultural de Belem
Praça do Império 1449-003 Lisboa
The development of this comprehensive project relating to Gregotti’s studio (documented in the exhibition through plans and original scale models, in addition to reproductions and photographs) starts with the latest works and moves backwards in time until reaching the ideal bond with those from the 1950s. New directions were later developed during the 1970s. These were followed by tenders and projects for European cities during the 1980s, including for housing projects. During the 1990s came many changes to the principles of urban design, with countless projects for European cities. Over the last decade, he has mostly dealt with the subject of urban refoundation in Africa and China in particular, with the construction of the new city near Shanghai, Pujiang.
From 1953 until today Vittorio Gregotti has shared his studio with different personalities including Lodovico Meneghetti and Giotto Stoppino, Pierluigi Cerri, Pierluigi Nicolin, Hiromichi Matsui, Bruno Viganò, Carlo Magnani, Augusto Cagnardi and Michele Reginaldi as well as external partners such as Manuel Salgado and Saad Benkirane, the Associates and a large group of collaborators. His activity represents a sort of unicum in European architecture, characterized by a methodological unity and an integral commitment in all the scales of the project: architecture, urban design, interiors and museum installations, furniture and industrial products, graphics and publishing. The title of the exhibition, taken from the title of a homonymous book, establishes an ideal continuity and a form of mirroring with the territory of architecture as a meeting surface between contributions from other experiences and disciplines.
With 60 drawings, 40 original models in scale and 700 between reproductions and photographs, the exhibition will guide the visitor inside the Territory of architecture designed by Gregotti: from the works of the ’50s, through the anthropogeographical projects of the’ 70s as the University of Florence and Calabria and those for the European cities of the 80s such as Berlin and the cultural center of Belém in Lisbon, up to the most recent projects in Africa and Pujiang in China.
A path of research, but also a form of resistance against the dissolution of architecture in communication, to bring the figure of the architect back into the depths of the great European culture. The exhibition catalog, published by Skira Editore, includes critical contributions by Rafael Moneo, Joseph Rykwert and Franco Purini.
The exhibition is organized with the support of TOD’S, sponsor of the exhibition activity of the PAC, with the contribution of Alcantara and Cairo Editore and with the support of Vulcano.
