By acquiring shares in a cooperative, future residents actively participate in the investment and decisions necessary for any real estate transaction. This form of governance based on direct democracy, solidarity and sustainability also promotes the promotion of affordable housing without resorting to the logic of traditional subsidies.
Present in Zurich since 1907, housing cooperatives now own around a third of the rental housing stock there. Changing lifestyles and environmental issues have invited these very special owners to reinvent the art of building and living in cities. An exhibition produced by the association Le logement Otherwise and presented by the City of Architecture & Heritage.
