“RCR. Dream and Nature Catalonia in Venice” at the 2018 Venice Biennale

The project reveals an unknown side to Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta: their most intimate world. All three architects have created a space in which to investigate and rethink humanity’s relationship with the world that can be found in La Vila, in the Bianya valley (Girona), and their project for the Venice Biennale revolves around this.

At the presentation of the project to the press, the director of the institute Ramon Llull, Manuel Forcano, pointed out the unusual fact that what is exhibited “is not a finished project, but a work in progress, an idea under construction, ideas to work on, and I like this because it gives it an air of volatility, something open.” Forcano described the Catalan pavilion as a “poem” for its “introspection, intimacy and depth”. The locally-based architects evoke universal identity through their creative and extensive use of modern materials including recycled steel and plastic. Their work “La Lira Theater” Public Open Space at Ripoll, Girona, was finalist for the BigMat ’15 National Prize.

The three architects, originating from Olot, in the Catalonian region of Spain, have worked together collaboratively since founding their firm RCR Arquitectes, in their hometown in 1988. Their work demonstrates an unyielding commitment to place and its narrative, to create spaces that are in discourse with their respective contexts. Harmonizing materiality with transparency, Aranda, Pigem and Vilalta seek connections between the exterior and interior, resulting in emotional and experiential  architecture. (more…)

The architecture of RCR, very expressive, is made of materials such as Cor-ten steel, natural stone, exposed concrete and large glass surfaces, among others. Its buildings blend into the landscape in which they sit, dematerializing the boundaries between interior and exterior. Models, sketches, various construction elements used in their buildings and audiovisual pieces constitute part of this exhibition. Drawings, sketches and watercolors play a major role in the project phases and materialization of their buildings.

RCR Arquitectes‘ trajectory is linked to the landscapes of the county of Garrotxa, Catalonia, with its volcanic rocks, forests and light, and to the proximity of artisans and manufacturers. The three architects imagine and build in order to ensure that their architecture brings something positive, beyond purely functional buildings, and these roots are manifested far from their land.

“To live and work in harmony with the countryside“ – this slogan has been accompanying the Catalan studio since its very beginning. This is also one of the reasons for which the architects have established themselves in the little town of Olot, situated at the foothills of the Pyrenees. Although they create their works far from the pulsating city of Barcelona, they demonstrate on several fundamental projects that rural environments are not completely unknown to contemporary conceptions of architecture.

Despite a complete breach of established interpretations of construction suitable for these places, their architectonic works correlate delicately with the surrounding countryside and are in a complete harmony with nature. Using patinating steel known under the name of Corten, which considerably lowers the rate of corrosion, the RCR studio has included in its constructions a material that completely identifies itself with the character of the ambient countryside.
