“Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today” at Vitra Design Museum Gallery

“Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today” offers the first large-scale examination of the relationship between club culture and design, from past to present. The exhibition presents nightclubs as spaces that merge architecture and interior design with sound, light, fashion, graphics, and visual effects to create a modern Gesamtkunstwerk.

The nightclub is one of the most important design spaces in contemporary culture. Since the 1960s, nightclubs have been epicentres of pop culture, distinct spaces of nocturnal leisure providing architects and designers all over the world with opportunities and inspiration. Examples range from Italian clubs of the 1960s created by the protagonists of Radical Design to the legendary Studio 54 where Andy Warhol was a regular, from the Haçienda in Manchester designed by Ben Kelly to more recent concepts by the OMA architecture studio for the Ministry of Sound in London.  (more…)

“The Log-O-Rithmic Slide Rule: A Retrospective” Trix & Robert Haussmann at KW Institute

The architect and designer duo Trix & Robert Haussmann may be counted among the most important Swiss architects of the twentieth century. They have realized about 650 projects in their lifetime including the legendary Da Capo Bar, Shopville in Zurich’s main railway station, the boutique Weinberg, the famous Kronenhalle Bar and numerous successful experiments in artistic and handcrafted furniture.

“New Bauhaus Chicago: Experiment Photography and Film” at Bauhaus-Archiv

Extensive photography show to celebrate 80th anniversary of the founding of American school succeeding the Bauhaus. This will be the last exhibition in the Bauhaus-Archiv building before the museum’s modernisation and expansion.

The Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung is presenting the photography of Chicago’s New Bauhaus and the Institute of Design that emerged out of it in a major exhibition running from 15 November 2017 to 5 March 2018. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Bauhaus successor institution that was founded by the avant-garde artist and former Bauhaus teacher László Moholy-Nagy in 1937 and developed into an important centre of photographic education in the US. “Tabula – Arvo Pärt Centre” by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos at AEDES Architecture Forum Berlin

The exhibition TABULA presents the Arvo Pärt Centre created by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos in Estonia. The new home for the centre is currently under construction and will house the legacy of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. The building complex is situated in Laulasmaa, 35 km from Tallinn, on a peninsula with a magnificent natural surrounding within a pine forest near the sea.

The core of the Arvo Pärt Centre will be the archive, which brings together the entire creative heritage of the composer, providing a research and learning environment for cultural education. The exhibition presents a visual-acoustic installation which captures the atmosphere of the Arvo Pärt Centre, while visitors can listen to Arvo Pärts composition ‘Tabula rasa’. (more…)

“Craft becomes Modern. The Bauhaus in the Making” at Bauhaus Dessau Foundation

Craft becomes Modern. The Bauhaus in the Making is the first of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation’s exhibitions for the 2019 centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus. Hammering, planing, sawing and weaving – it was pretty loud and dusty in the workshop wing of the School of Design, the Bauhaus Dessau. Although conceived as ‘laboratories for industry’, a great deal was still done by hand in the Dessau workshops.

The exhibition Craft becomes Modern. The Bauhaus in the Making tells the story of the workshops from the perspective of craft in the original setting, the weaving workshop in the Bauhaus building in Dessau. At the Bauhaus the relationships between art, applied art, industrial production and craft were discussed in more radical terms than elsewhere. And the backdrop to these domains, the economic and political situation in the Weimar Republic on which the school was dependent and in which it also aimed to actively intervene, had a far greater influence on the fate of this institution than any other. SOS BRUTALISM Save the Concrete Monsters! at DAM Frankfurt

With “SOS BRUTALISM – Save the Concrete Monsters!” the DAM is presenting in collaboration with the Wüstenrot Foundation the first-ever global survey of the Brutalist architecture of the 1950s to 1970s. At the DAM, Brutalism is reexamined with unusually large-scale models and cast concrete miniatures.

For the first time Brutalist architecture of the 1950s–1970s is presented in a global survey. The term Brutalism does not come from the word “brutal”, but to “béton brut”, the French term for exposed concrete.  The exhibition features buildings from Japan, Brazil, the former Yugoslavia and Israel, as well as Great Britain, where Alison and Peter Smithson invented New Brutalism. “Frau Architekt” Over 100 Years of Women in Architecture exhibition at DAM

The “Frau architekt” exhibition retells architectural history – from the perspective of women who for over a hundred years have been defining and designing architecture. The exhibition elucidates the topic in 22 portraits, project examples and very personal stories of women in Germany who have significantly influenced architecture or are currently shaping it.

Emancipation movements and in particular gender politics were driving forces in the 20th century. Women entered Modernism by conquering professions from which they had hitherto been excluded, by becoming politically active, in part taking extreme positions, and by trying out new gender relationships. The exhibition shows how 22 women encountered the massive upheaval by questioning the conventional standards of what was feminine and establishing themselves in the architectural profession. (more…)

“Does permanence matter? Ephemeral urbanism” at Architekturmuseum der TU München

How long-term should urban planning be? Munich’s Oktoberfest, the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage in India (or the largest gathering of humans on the planet), the Burning Man Festival in Nevada, and other major events demonstrate that flexible architectural configurations are temporarily deployed around the globe to provide medium-term shelter, often to enormous crowds.

Such structures fulfill a range of functional tasks and are used in religious and cultural festivals or can take the form of military camps, refugee camps, or even temporary mining towns. This show traces a global phenomenon that has become increasingly topical given today’s current state of mass migration triggered by climate change, political strife, and natural disasters. (more…)

“Space On Demand” Diller Scofidio + Renfro at AEDES Architecture Forum Berlin

As DS+R’s first exhibition in Berlin, ’Space On Demand’ presents a rare preview of the studio’s methodology and innerworkings through the close examination of a single project, still under construction: The Shed, a multi-arts center designed to commission, produce, and present all types of performing arts, visual arts, and popular culture.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) is an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts. Founded in 1979, the New York City-based practice established its identity through self-generated, theoretical art installations before reaching international prominence through projects such as the renovation and expansion of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, and the High Line, an urban park built on an abandoned elevated railway trestle on Manhattan’s west side. Today, DS+R is led by four partners who collaborate on the design of each project with a staff of 100 architects, artists, researchers, and writers. DS+R is currently engaged in numerous projects across the world: the 34-acre Zaryadye Park adjacent to the Kremlin in Moscow; the Museum of Image & Sound on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, and The Juilliard School’s first overseas campus in Tianjin, China. Architektur Galerie Berlin presents STEAL SCHINKEL, a students’ approach to Schinkel’s Bauakademie

Demolished in 1962, Schinkel’s Bauakademie in Berlin is now scheduled to be rebuilt on a budget of 62 million euros. Students from Studio EAST at EPFL Lausanne have undertaken a research and design programme to reflect on the possibilities of the building’s inminent reconstruction.

Following the budgeting of 62 million euros in March 2017  for the reconstruction of Schinkel’s Bauakademie in Berlin, German architects are in the need of re-formulating and reflecting over the historical original building and its meaning today.

How and how much will we keep the memory of Schinkel’s Bauakademie? How do we want this place to behave in its contemporary urban landscape? How, or do we, want to update the functional program of the building for the future? Is it possible to find a Schinkelian sense and expression of designing buildings today?
