“Globes. Architecture and science explore the world” exhibition at Citè de l’Architecture

The exhibition focus on how architects have participated, alongside geographers, astronomers, mathematicians, artists… to discover the Globe and the cosmos, as well as their representation. And how, in return, this major discovery has haunted and still haunts architecture, from Adam Olearius (xvııe) to Rem Koolhaas to Buckminster Fuller.

This is the architecture presented in a very beautiful posture: a knowledge and a trade at the crossroads of arts and sciences. “Globes. Architecture and science explore the world” shows how architects were actors in the discovery of the world, bearers of universal aspirations, designers of monuments of knowledge. How they invented the first observatories or planetariums, adjusting their knowledge to that of scientists to meet a constructive challenge: to build large spherical volumes. In 90 major pieces, the exhibition tells the epic of spectacular buildings, carrying a humanist project of conquest and transmission of knowledge, and the adventures of architects with an exceptional destiny, in turn companions of scientists, utopians to their account, as CN Ledoux, directors of the Power as also sometimes inventors-jugglers of the Universal Expositions. “Cité de l’architecture et du Patrimoine” in Paris pays hommage to its donors in a 10th anniversary exhibition

Since the opening of the “City of Architecture and Heritage” in 2007, this institution has grown to be a reference for the dissemination of French architecture. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the Cité has organized an exhibition, an open forum discussion and many other events and activities to bring the institution closer to the general public.

The Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine in Paris is celebrating a 10-year retrospective exhibition featuring the collection’s highilghts acquisited over the last decade. This important museum, dedicated to the archiving and dissemination of architectural knowledge, is proud to present a selection of projects and assets that have enriched the City’s collection over the last ten years: contemporary models, drawings, digital persepctives stand side by side with antique models, drawings and preliminary sketches of nineteenth and twentieth century architecture.

The exhibition, called “10 ans d’acquisitions (2007 – 2017)” is both a celebration of the diversity of French architecture and an opportunity to rediscover some of it most relevant projects.  (more…)

“Let’s go to the beach!” seaside resorts from the 18th century to present day

The exhibition presents the architecture and town planning uniqueness of seashores in France from the 18th century to the beginning of the 21st century, compared to many other examples in other countries.

“Les universalistes” 50 years of Portuguese architecture now showing in Paris

The exhibition, celebrating the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s 50th anniversary in Paris, showcases some of the best Portuguese architecture in search for the universalist movement already present in Portuguese literature, cinema and arts.

“Une architecture de l’engagement: L’AUA (1960-1985)” architecture and commitment at Paris

The works displayed show the diversity of the Atelier, and their impact on urban landscape. Models, drawings, photographs, films, publications, furniture, samples, prototypes and documents evoke the trajectory and the lives its members inside and beyond the walls of the AUA.

Shortly after the death of Le Corbusier, fifty years ago, the Circle of Architectural Studies awarded its price to three teams: the Atelier de Montrouge, the group of Salier Courtois, Lajus, Sadirac and Atelier d’urbanisme et d’architecture (AUA). The latter is particularly distinguished by its multidisciplinary nature, for it was the first to join architects, decorators, engineers, urban planners and sociologists around a common project, while maintaining a close relationship with politics and culture.

Through both a theme-based and chronological journey, the multifaceted work of the Atelier AUA is presented with models, drawings, photographs, publications, films and full-scale objects, elements from the buildings and furniture. (more…)

One building, how many lives? Exhibition in Paris: transformation as an act of creation

The exhibition focuses on an inherent issue of urban development: to reuse, in order to open the way for an urban revival. The concept of recycling as a way to stimulate a new approach on building cities.

Cité de l’rchitecture & du patrimoine in Paris is hosting an exhibition on an interesting discussion over architectural heritage and the concept of reuse and recylcing in urban terms. From the 17th of December 2014 to the 28th of September 2015, the Galerie d’architecture moderne will be showing a selection of 72 projects in France and abroad in order to set some examples of heritage-conscious urban renewal addressed from very different point of views.

“Viollet-le-Duc, a visionary architect” at the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine de Paris

On the occasion of the 200th birth anniversary of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, a retrospective exhibition presents the unique work of this great architect, theorist and restorer who was also the founder of the National Museum of French Monuments, where the exhibition is showing.

Eugène Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879) is one of the few architects of the nineteenth century whose death did not drive him to oblivion, but quite on the contrary.

Despite the controversies, his restoration works have always been a reference for architecture professionals, and his genius has marked the history of art and architecture of the Middle Ages. For a long time, historians have attempted to put his archeological science and his ideas on restoration into perspective. Then, from the 1970’s on, his ideas on architectural design were subject of study and controversy.

Now, thirty years after the last monographic exhibition was dedicated to him in Paris, it is the least known aspects and the most unexpected production of this talented artist which will be presented to the public, as a testimony of the richness and complexity of his personality.  We already know the rational nature of his approach to architectural practice: now is the turn to emphasize his work as a visionary of architecture. To illustrate, in other terms, the intimacy between the positivist system that Viollet-le-Duc represents, and his romantic delusions, the sources of his genius.  A personality which is  strange and complex, hyperactive and productive, relating his encyclopedic knowledge to the service of both a political and aesthetic plan.

The exhibition will be showing in the main venue of the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine de Paris -at Place Trocadéro, 1- until March 9th, 2015.
