“Arquipélago”: new Centre for the Contemporary Arts in Ribeira Grande, Portugal

Portuguese office Menos é Mais and João Mendes Ribeiro have transformed a formed tobacco factory in Azores into a building complex for the dissemination of local contemporary arts.

An archipelago is said to be “a large group or chain of islands” or “a large body of water with many islands“. The Azores Islands, for example, form an archipelago. On the island of San Miguel lies Ribeira Grande, a small town where last spring, portuguese architects João Mendes Ribeiro and Menos é Mais Arquitectos (Cristina Guedes and Francisco Vieira de Campos) started works for a new center for the contemporary arts.
