“O. M. Ungers: Programmatic projects” at the Architecture Museum of the TU Berlin

Around 1965 Oswald Mathias Ungers designs (1926-2007) a number of competitive projects with strong programmatic character: the dormitory Enschede 1964, the German Embassy to the Holy See Rome in 1965 and the Berlin Museum in 1965 the Prussian Cultural Heritage.

There are projects that examine in a precise and deliberate fashion the conceptual essence of architectural form, the essence of the form as an illustration of an idea. morphological basic concepts are paradigmatic it worked out and developed, issues such as transformation or assemblage. Contrary to the principles of reductive functionalism of this year, they emphasize with their reference to place and history and with their rational poetry the autonomy of the architecture and the importance of form. so they are announcing some key issues of the architectural debate of the following years: issues that characterize, for example, the key texts by Robert Venturi and Aldo Rossi from the year 1966.
