Jaroslav Fragner Gallery presents its most recent exhibition dedicated to rental housing. Following a change in the Czech real-estate market, where rented apartments seem to have risen after years of decline, the exhibition picks out some of the most interesting examples within the Czech Republic and aborad to highlight the possibilities of this housing type in contemporary architecture.

The exhibition displays the work of almost 40 architectural practices, comprising some of the most interesting Czech architects  as well as foreign architecture offices such as  BIG, Lacaton & Vassal, Masion Eduard François, MVRDV…

In the past approximately 150 years, housing has been realized in principle as private, rental or cooperative. In Czechoslovakia and later Czech Republic, the relevance of rental housing began to decline sharply after 1989, in particular due to massive privatization of flats and apartments. Nowadays, rentable housing is again beginning to rise in importance. Indeed, the many advanced European countries have a balanced ratio between user-owned and rented housing.

What are the basic qualities of rental housing and what are the current trends in it‘s perception and construction? The exhibition presents an excursion into our relatively recent history of rental housing and its forms, shown in relation to other social phenomena of the given period. It also compares our tenement housing with the development in other European countries and the best examples in different locations and urban areas.
