Milano Design Film Festival is celebrating today the opening of it’s third edition, focused more than ever on architecture and urban landscapes. From October 15 to 18 an appointment with  architecture  and  design  returns  to  the  big  screen  of  the Anteo spazioCinema, located just outside the heart of Milan.

This year the zoom lens focuses this on the reality, the experimentation and the complete transformations of the cities and the territory. From the urban development underway in China to the new building colonizations, from ways to live sustainably to the encroachment of planning: the selection of more than 70 documentaries focuses on the most recent cinematic production.

Eileen Gray

One of the highlights os this year’s edition is, in fact, one of these homages that opens the four day festival – the re-reading of a great protagonist of the 1990s: Irish-woman Eileen Gray, architect and designer able to subvert the social and design rules with determination and creative sentiment.

The price of desire (Ireland, 2014) by Mary McGuckian – Italian première, introduced by the director, for the October 15 and 16 screenings – not only documents the design of the villa E1027 of the talented Gray, but reveals the background, and the dynamics of the complex relationships with the neighbors Jean Badovici, Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand.

Through the reconstruction of the director we come into contact with her less-well-known private life: the relationship with her memory, her fragility, her femininity and the illness that would render her completely blind.

To further examine Gray’s complex figure, there is also the documentary, Gray matters (Italy/United States, 2014), by Marco Orsini, that retraces all of the stops along the course of her professional life. In support of the inaugural evening Irlanda Expo Milano 2015, he brings his contribution and presence.

Architecture and Design

For the first time Artek joins the MDFF team as Film Partner, with the historic documentary of Ywe Jalander, Alvar Aalto. Technology and Nature (Finland, 1987), which tells of the prophetic organic vision of the Finnish designer. For the occasion, B&B Italia has produced B&B Italia. La poesia nella forma. Quando il design incontra l’industria, by 3D Produzioni, that documents the history of the Agency, highlighting the creativity and productivity of its heritage.

Cassina, for the 50th anniversary of LC Collection, celebrates the icons Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, with the film by Valeria Parisi and Didi Gnocchi Le Corbusier 50. Storia di incontri che hanno rivoluzionato il design. Marazzi, already a supporter of past editions, supports the screening of the W.I.N.D. House by UNStudio Architects (directed by A.P. Komen, Karen Murph (Holland, 2015), immersing the spectator in the dialog between client and architect. Domus has reconfirmed its participation with State of Design: a video that collects a series of interviews with major designers of the contemporary scene, many of which were discovered by the same publication, respond to the question: What is design?
