The exhibition continues the reflections that emerged at the conference entitled “The architecture competitions in Venice” held in the Aula Magna at the Tolentini headquarters on April 30, 2019, through the exhibition of the models of the projects participating in the International Design Competition for the New Palace of Cinema at the Lido of Venice in 1990 and of the second competition for the New Palace of the Cinema and the neighboring areas of 2005.

The exhibition does not intend to compare the results of the 1990 competition with those of the 2005 competition, but rather the very different themes and objectives set by the two calls, which have led to project outcomes whose heterogeneity demonstrates the different attitudes in the ‘to address the theme of the Palazzo del Cinema within the same urban and landscape context, in the face of the different assumptions established by the two calls.

Both competitions highlight the symbolic value of the New Palazzo del Cinema that the projects on display interpret each with its own peculiarities: a place of entertainment with an international and urban character, an identity building for the Mostra del Cinema and for the Lido itself, on the border between the city and nature, located between the Venetian lagoon and the Adriatic sea.

Specifically, the nine models of the following architects participating in the exhibition will be exhibited:

1990 competition: C. Aymonino, M. Botta, S. Fehn, S. Holl, R. Moneo, M. Hentrup, F. Maki, J. Nouvel, O.M. Ungers; and the eight models of the following architects and architectural firms participating in the 2005 competition: S. Boeri, R. Moneo, Bolles & Wilson, F. Cellini, K. Kada, M. Fuksas, Eisenman Architects, MBM Arquitectes. The winning project of 5 + 1AA (A. Femia and G. Peluffo) and Rudy Ricciotti will be exhibited through a video projection.

Two videos complete the set-up: the first with a viewpoint from the Lido towards Venice and the second with a viewpoint from the Lido towards the sea. The lagoon and the sea are the fixed scenes of the events taking place in the Palazzo del Cinema and the two videos intend to suggest to the visitor the urban and landscape context, reproducing the colors, sounds and rhythms that mark the time of the lagoon and the sea.
