The exhibition completes a cycle of three exhibitions curated by Professor Stefan Vieths and dedicated to the great German architect Oswald M. Ungers.
“O.M. Ungers: the construction of the urban place”
3 September – 13 September, 2019
Exhibition space “Galleria del progetto” Politecnico di Milano
Via Ampère, 2, 20133 Milano
The exhibition process started from the first works of the Fifties, the subject of the first exhibition, then focused on the second exhibition on the projects of maturity and now faces, in the third exhibition, the theme of the construction of the urban place through three important achievements aimed at the future of the city: the Karlsruhe Library, the Architecture Museum and the extension of the Frankfurt Fair.
To carry out this journey, Archivi Storici worked with the Ungers Archiv für Architekturwissenschaft in Cologne, which provided the precious original materials: drawings, models, photographs. The public is offered a cross-section that from the crisis of the Modern Movement leads to the elaboration of a practice and a theory that reflects on the primary forms and foundations of the discipline, in an interrelation with the pre-existing each time new and surprising.
These are public works built in the early eighties in conformed urban contexts, which mark a new phase in the German designer’s morphological research, “compared with the reality of the contemporary city and its concrete needs”.
Ungers’ three realizations “starting from a thematic approach, aim to complete the urban form – intended as a constructed form, as a complex set of urban spaces and architectural volumes – and give a precise interpretation to the concrete program and to the morphological context”.
