From May to September, the landscape and public space of this West Bohemian metropolis will be the platform for a public dialogue on the possibilities of the perception of our surroundings. Once again, the Festival will present many inspiring exhibitions with examples of high-quality Czech as well as foreign landscape creations.
However, it is especially the site-specific installations by Czech and foreign artists and architects, which trigger a discussion on the future development and work potential in a modern and well-functioning city. In addition, debates, lectures, conferences and workshops on Festival themes will be held within the accompanying programme.
Landscape Festival Pilsen 2017
May 19 – September 30, 2017
During the preparations for the 5th annual Landscape Festival, we often encountered the question: “What is this [ˈlændskeɪp] ?” The question aims at the very essence of the entire project. Landscape is the central theme of the Festival which, after four previous years in Opava and Prague’s Žižkov Freight Railway Station, turns its attention to the scenery of the City of Pilsen – the 2015 European Capital of Culture.
SITE SPECIFIC INSTALLATIONS, HAPPENINGS, WORKSHOPS
The festival aim is to draw the attention of the public in Pilsen and raise their interest in the cultivation of public space, to intervene in the form of happenings and interventions in urban space and thus to the life of the city itself, to perform landscape projects of a lasting impact within the festival and to support the natural cooperation of institutions and associations engaged in similar activities. For example, we try to reopen and deepen the traditional debate about the absence of greenery on the main Pilsen square and the adjacent streets using experimental installation MOVING FOREST (NL architects) or another installation PARALLEL PATH (Ottotto) offers a space where we can walk or dance and refresh in the hot summer days.
Pilsen landscape presents several motifs presented in the Festival. It is a landscape of the historical city centre with the question of the use of greenery. The industrial landscape is a reminder of the industrial development of the city (e.g. premises of DEPO2015 complex, Papírna Plzeň paper mill and Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery). The Festival has also entered the realm of hospitals, in the form of student interventions, where it introduces the theme of semi-public space and its sensitive atmosphere. During the summer months, the recreational landscape, which is literally a stone’s throw from the City of Pilsen, will be the focus of the Festival.
EXHIBITIONS LECTURES CONFERENCES
The exhibitions, lectures and conferences present eminent examples mostly of European landscape architecture that in future can be realised in the Czech Republic as well and raises awareness among professionals and the laic public about the meaning and scope of the field of landscape architecture.
For these few months we create Open air gallery on the river bank of Radbuza and on the facades of old industrial object Papírna Plzeň which represents quality example of land art and public space (e.g. EUNIC LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE presents 36 realized projects from 18 European countries, SWISS TOUCH IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE represents the work of Swiss landscape architects from the beginning of the 20th century to the present etc.).
The interiors and courtyard of other industrial object DEPO2015 complex offer also lots of quality exhibitions (e.g. PUBLIC SPACE 16 presents projects that have won the European Urban Spaces Award, which is initiated by the Centre for Contemporary Culture in Barcelona (CCCB); INDUSTRIAL TOPOGRAPHY: ARCHITECTURE OF CONVERSATION presents part of the Industrial Topography project and is followed by a narrative publication of the same name, mapping the successful transformations of industrial buildings etc.).
In september Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery will be hosting conference ARTSCAPE (landscape – public space – architecture – art). Artistic and architectonic interventions into landscape and public space on Iceland, in Norway and in the Czech Republic. Designated for professionals and students from the field of: architecture, urbanism, landscape architecture and for wide public interested in key topics of Landscape festival. Supporting programme of the conference is represented by commented tour around the area of brewery (organised by Pěstuj prostor Association).
