These photographs are a precious heritage for many reasons: for the artistic quality of the shots , made especially for the Architecture Guide of Milan 1954-2014 ( Hoepli , 2013, 2015); because the images portray the present condition of the buildings, constituting an updated and rigorous documentation; because the selection of the shots took place through a multidisciplinary debate between the authors of the photographs, the supervisors and the editors of the books .

The exhibition

The title of this exhibition takes up to a famous book published in 1836 by Augustus Welby Pugin, Contrasts or Parallel between the Noble Edifices of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries and Similar Buildings of the Present Day, in which the neogothic English architect – through a series of comparisons between images of buildings , monuments and cities related to two different eras – controversially intended to demonstrate the “decadence of current taste .”

The exhibition is, precisely in this sense, a comparative method: the parallelisms and comparisons among the images presented here, far from wanting to prove the “decadence of actual taste “, seek to highlight aspects of the buildings in Milan between the 50’s and 70’s and between the 80s and today, which may seem destined to escape when analyzed separately.

The map

Next to the photographs on the wall, a large interactive map will be installed in which you will be able to see the 47 scale models of the buildings exposed that were specially  made for the occasion.Their position on the map will move to match its location, projecting historical images and further information on the building .

The photographs displayed  were taken mostly  by Paola Di Bello, in collaboration with some of her best students of the MA Degree in Photography at the Brera Academy. The course was structured along lessons by photographers Gabriele Basilico, Mario Cresci, Vincenzo Castella and Franco Vaccari, who followed and supervised the photographs of the students .
