Communication breakdown: architects’ gatherings in Barcelona to strengthen proffesional discourse

The local’s architects association is organizing five gatherings every Thursday, once a fortnight, which will be made up of five different teams of local architects. Focusing on their work as a background for a wider discourse on contemporary local architecture, the meetings are open to the public.

Arquitectes per l’Arquitectura, a local architect’s association in Barcelona, is organizing a series of social gatherings with young architects from different areas of expertise, all of which have developed their work over the last years during the economic crisis.

Each of the gatherings will be made up of five different teams of local architects, focusing on their work as a background for a wider discourse on contemporary local architecture and the apparent lack of communication between professionals.

Held on Thursdays, once a fortnight, the meetings are open to the public.

A quote of the organizers:

“Nowadays, to make yet another series of conferences about a profession which is unwilling to reinvent itself is something that doesn´t seem to be quite worth doing. We know how it goes. In recent years, between self-applause and disaster, a generation of architects has been forged – their work showcased in small exhibitions, although unfortunately, often lacking a final debate.

Some of these generations have never lived the good times, and  hardly  manage to get some of their work out the door. Probably because of this situation there are many young architecture office’s  who do not know each other directly, weakening a possible collective discussion on architecture and built works. Photographs, plans and a report on the internet are not enough. Neither is right for the author or for his colleagues who want to understand his work, to know the details about it and see if they are any good to solve similar problems in their professional practice.

For this purpose these gatherings are born, focusing on different topics, with the work of several authors as a background. To meet each other as people and to recognize each other as architects, trying to see what has been done over the past few years, that seem like decades for some of us.”
