The concept of landscape has deeply evolved over the last thirty years. It holds a different meaning. Rather than an outward space, located at a distance, the landscape today embodies a collective reality invested by man that unveils our various ways of inhabiting and transforming the territory. By questioning the very idea of limit, it comprises architecture and urbanism as much as green areas. It is beacause of these unprecendented superimpositions of lansdcape and man-made terrotories, because of the new uses and relationships aroused, it seems that today, the concept of landscape strongly relates to the notion of freedom in our society.
Because Arc en Rêve has welcomed landscape thinkers for thirty years for exhibitions, conferences, round tables or publications, the architectural center has taken the opportunity of carrying out a retrospective exhibition. “Collection paysages 1987-2017”, is the recollection of the work of 19 landscapers, architects, urban planners, designers who helped open the field of contemporary landscape thinking. In context with such an evolutionary and eclectic landscape history, the exhibition focuses on the materials that were presented in Arc en Rêve over the last 30 years of activities and exhibitions. Featuring all sorts of archival documents, texts, models, mock-ups, installations and videos, it presents a total of 19 flagship projects, some of which were never actually carried out, either in Bordeaux of elsewhere.
