“Between landscapes and history” Wright and organic architecture at IUAV, two exhibitions at the Tolentini

The exhibition aims to illustrate the reception that Frank Lloyd Wright’s lesson and the “organicist” conception had within the IUAV from the post-World War II period.

Some concomitant facts contributed decisively to the development of an original and multifaceted tendency: the presence in the School directed by Giuseppe Samonà of a historian such as Bruno Zevi – of which the centenary of his birth occurs -, the arrival in Venice of Wright and the task attributed to him to design the Angelo Masieri Memorial on the waters of the Grand Canal, the role of “mediator” of the American master’s thought played by Carlo Scarpa, a brilliant, influential and already established architect.

In this context – and in an absolutely unique and unrepeatable cultural ferment – precious talents developed, as can be seen in the section dedicated to 16 eminent figures that constitute a tangible panorama of the design skills that the “season” expressed. The photographic section dedicated to the journey to the United States (1949-50) by Bruno Morassutti is another extraordinary (and up to now unknown) proof of the attraction that Wright, Soleri and the new American landscapes exercised in that precise historical phase.

The variety of the exhibited materials, from the drawings to the photographs, to the films, to the publications, to the didactic materials of the courses held at the IUAV, undoubtedly makes the idea of a complex production, rich in inspiration and interpretative modalities.

It constitutes the testimony of what was imagined and realized in a School of architecture that – “unique” in Italy – demonstrated the ability to elaborate ideas closely linked to the international debate, knowing how to inscribe in the landscapes of the North-East Italian with conviction and with confidence in the development of a renewed planning and social experience of modernity.
