Architecture, design and photography join this summer in Lisbon’s MUDE

This summer, Lisbon’s MUDE is focusing on the relationship between architects and design, with two shows: Eminent Architects and Designer Architects. The installations comprise a broad display of designer objects of the Francisco Capelo Collection and a selection of black and white portraits by Ingrid von Kruse.

This summer, the MUDE -the Fashion and Design Museum of Lisbon– focuses on architecture with the inauguration of two simultaneous shows drawing on the relationship between architects and design.

Comprised by objects of the museums main collection, the Coleção Francisco Capelo, the exhibition Designer Architects located on the first floor of the museum displays a series of celebrated designer objects, ranging from chairs to lamps, signed by famous architects like Alvar Aalto, Andrea Branzi, Charles Eames, Michael Graves, Vittorio Gregotti, Arne Jacobsen, Gio Ponti, Jean Prouvé, Carlo Scarpa, Eero Saarinen or  Ettore Sottsass, among many others.

Next to them will stand the portraits by Ingrid von Kruse, a designer herself, who came to specialize in portrait photography.  The selection of portraits in black and white, namely Eminent Architects, portray the architects in a intimate scenario, focusing on natural lighting, creating a tranquil atmosphere in which the hands and gaze of the architect are the protagonists.

The exhibition will be open until the 16th of August.

About the exhibition

Architecture is the common denominator that brings closer Eminent Architects and Designer Architects.

The exhibition Eminent Architects presents a selection of black and white photographs by Ingrid von Kruse. The look, the hands and the expression of each portrayed, along with calligraphy, features and ideas expressed in the statements and sketches, allow knowing better some of the most prominent architects of today. Her photographs offer unique and intimate, sincere and natural portraits, without pose and zoomed, captured in the studios, in their own homes or recent construction sites. The challenge set out in this exhibition led us to observe the museum’s collection, seeking to emphasize the complementary relationship between the practice of architecture and the practice of design throughout the twentieth century.

Consequentially, the exhibition Designer Architects displays a selection of furniture, lighting fixture and small objects, designed by architects and that show how they reach design as a natural development of the project-oriented architectural practice. Continuing to publicize the Francisco Capelo Collection, particular attention is paid to pieces or authors not yet displayed to the public.
