Roofs offer the fifth view of a building and give character to our cities. The “The Fifth View” exhibition explains the design of more than 30 impressive roof projects and portrays the changes seen over the centuries based on numerous models, drawings and photographs.

The Oskar von Miller Forum presents this exhibition in cooperation with the M:AI Museum für Architektur und Ingenieurkunst NRW. To celebrate its opening on October 27, Ewald Bubner, Professor emeritus of Structural Design at the University of Duisburg-Essen, will hold a lecture entitled “Membranes in the Construction Sector – Development, Systems, Span Widths.” Bubner was Frei Otto’s partner for many years and as such involved in developing Munich’s Olympic Stadium. Ursula Kleefisch-Jobst, general curator of the M:AI Museum für Architektur und Ingenieurbaukunst will give an introduction to the exhibition.
Roofs are not only building tops with a more or less formative influence on our cities that offer inhabitants protection, but can actually be a space for a variety of activities. The exhibition “The Fifth View”is split into two parts featuring both architectural history and contemporary projects. It helps visitors gain insight into how civil engineers and architects created and refined structural and design solutions over the centuries.
The first part, “architectural history,” shows selected projects from antiquity to the 1970s. It begins with the Pantheon, which was completed in 125 AD and is considered a masterpiece of design perfection and grandeur, and ranges to the floating tent-like structure of Munich’s Olympic roof made of acrylic glass and steel.
The following are among the roof structures presented: Hagia Sophia, Istanbul (532 – 562); Crystal Palace, Hyde Park, London (1851); Zeiss Planetarium, Jena (1924 – 1926); Leipzig Market Hall (1927 – 1929); Mannheim Multihalle (1975).
The second part, “contemporary architecture,” documents how computer-aided design and the development of new materials have enabled the design of increasingly spectacular and experimental roof structures worldwide. Ultrathin shells, huge domes, lightweight membrane structures in construction projects such as airports, train stations or stadiums bear witness to the engineering excellence of the 20th and 21st centuries. At the same time, roofs play an increasingly important role in terms of the sustainability of buildings.
The projects presented include (among others): Sydney Opera House (1959 – 1973), Terminal 3, Stuttgart Airport, the tent-like roof structures of the Royal Terminal, Jeddah (2007), Reichstag Dome, Berlin (1999), Metropol Parasol, Seville.
