The European Comission and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation have announced the projects nominated in each country for the 2015 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award, with over 420 nominees from the 27 different countries participating in the European Union’s Cultural Programme. It is expected that the 80.000€ prize winner finalist shortlist will be announced briefly.

One of the Portuguese nominees has been Carrilho da Graça’s Data Center for Portugal Telecom, situated in Covilhã. The building is a large cube-like structure in a natural context, hosting a data processing center and offices.

Discover Herzog & deMeuron’s “Triangle” in Pavillon de l’Arsenal

From October 31st, the Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris will host Herzog & de Meuron’s “Triangle”, an exhibition on the controversial skyscraper by the Swiss firm.

“Nove Novos. Emerging Architects from Brazil” at CIVA Brussells

Open from October 22 to December 12, the exhibition will showcase the works of ten under-fourty architects from Brazil.

Nove Novos is an exhibition on contemporary Brazilian architecture, centered on the work of the youngest generation of architects in this country.  Overshadowed by the work of fellow prestigious architects Oscar Niemeyer or Paulo Mendes da Rocha, the buildings of these young architects are representative of an economically dynamic country with an architecture aside from the white, curvaceous forms and bold, sweeping lines.

“Souto de Moura: projects and competitions” opening in Madrid

The exhibition, organized by Fundación Arquitectura COAM, will showcase the Portuguese architect’s work for the first time in Spain.

On the occasion of the Ninth Week of Architecture of Madrid and within the activities of the XII Mostra Portuguesa, on Friday October 3, 2014, at 18: 00h,  the Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura gave a lecture entitled “Eduardo Souto de Moura: recent projects” at LA SEDE COAM, the Madrid association of architects. (See video below) Additionally, an exhibition titled “Eduardo Souto de Moura: proyectos y concursos” was inaugurated by the architect on the same day.

The exhibition, organized by Fundación Arquitectura COAM (COAM Architecture Fundation) and Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid COAM, with the collaboration of the Portuguese Embassy in Spain and the Camões- Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua, will be available to visitors in the Ground Floor of LASEDE COAM (c/ Hortaleza, 63) from October 3rd to January 15th.

Cloudscrapers. A century of skyscrapers in Milan

From November 6 to December 6 the Polytechnic University of Milan and the Riccardo Catella Foundation recount the story of Milan skyscrapers.

Milan, as told in the exhibition “Cloudscrapers. A century of skyscrapers in Milan” hosted from November 6 to December 6 at the Riccardo Catella Foundation,  via Gaetano De Castillia 28, is a rising city. It is a city designed by the silhouettes of the Velasca and Pirelli Towers, but also by the Lombardy regional government’s new headquarters,  the  Unicredit Tower by Cesar Pelli and the Porta Nuova Business District.

“Future under construction” at Paris-Saclay University

Round tables, lectures and over thirty architects’ presentations next to models, plans and chronograms, all between days 28 – 30 of November.

Right now, at the moment when the operational phase of the works in Paris-Saclay University is taking place, this public institution is proud to present a general update on the project in its scientific, economic, architectural and urban aspects. Round tables, lectures and over thirty architects’ presentations will take place next to many models, plans and chronograms between days 28 – 30 of November. These three days will be followed by a longer-lasting exhibition of the Paris-Saclay projects until December 20th.

Quito’s Pan-american Biennale 2014

One of South America’s most relevant architectural events has just taken place in Ecuador, from November 17th to 19th.

The Bienal Panamericana de Arquitectura de Quito (Quito’s Panamerican Architectural Biennale) started its XIX edition on November 17th, under the motto of “From the house to the city, from the city to the house”. This event, honoured by Ecuador’s National Assembly and considered as one of the most relevant of its kind in South America, enables since 1978 a meeting point for architecture professionals to show their work and share contemporary ideas in an inclusive, discussion-friendly environment.

Cruz y Ortiz, 2014 Spanish Gold Medal for Architecture

Antonio Cruz Villalon and Antonio Ortiz García from Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos has just received the Spanish Gold Medal for Architecture 2014. The Gold Medal for Architecture is the most prestigious award from the Superior Council.

Antonio Cruz Villalon and Antonio Ortiz García from Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos has just received the 2014 Spanish Gold Medal for Architecture, an award given by the Consejo Superior de Colegios de Arquitectos de España ( Spanish Superior Council of Architecture Colleges) (CSCAE)  every two years to an architect with the aim of contributing to the highest social and cultural level of architecture. The Gold Medal for Architecture is the most prestigious award  from the Superior Council.

Venice Biennale closing event: two conversations with Rem Koolhaas

Ending with a high note, the day before Biennale final closing, Saturday 22nd, two public events were organized with the attendance of the director of this year, Rem Koolhaas.

The 14th International Architecture Exhibition – Fundamentals – came to a close on Sunday 23 November 2014. The show, organized by the Biennale di Venezia presided over by Paolo Baratta and curated by Rem Koolhaas, has become the most controversial architecture iteration of the festival in recent memory — and the most popular, according to statistics released by the Biennale over the weekend, attracting 228,000 visitors  during the 6 months aperture period (7.06-23.11) according with the official data provided by the organization, in addition to the 12,214 visitors who attended the preview. These figures cannot be compared with the 178,000 visitors in 2012 (10,408 during the preview) due to the three-month opening period that year.

The competition of Le Maillon was won in April by LAN (Local Architecture Network) with a proposal based on the idea of theatre as a process, rather than a fixed structure (as they quote in their own statement “the foyer-room-logistic” triade). Their design would smoehow work as a city; it could evolve, change, and transform itself as time goes by and at the user’s will. LAN Architecture is the winner of the French National phase of the Big Mat International Architectural Award.
