“Stephen Talasnik. Unearthed” at SATELLIT Architektur Galerie Berlin

Stephen Talasnik’s sculptures transcend the boundaries between architecture and art in both directions: although they are reminiscent of structurally and technically complex constructions, as habitats they belie the primacy of artistic freedom.

In this way, Talasnik’s sculptures balance structural necessity with spatial and formal experimentation. “Architecture without Architects” is how Talasnik describes the inspiration for his seemingly organic sculptures, which are developed without a plan: the form of Talsnik’s Hives is “unearthed” or dug out of the connection between the spatial framework- the bones- and only takes on its final shape once the skin, which is made out of strips of woven bamboo, is pulled over the supporting structure. Although the final result gives the impression of habitability and function, the Hives are actually a hybrid which combines the language of fictional structural engineering with that of dysfunctional architecture. “Empire of Ice Cream” Sam Jacob at Betts Project

Betts Project is pleased to present ‘Empire of Ice Cream,’ a solo exhibition by British architect Sam Jacob. This is the artist’s first exhibition at the gallery, and showcases a series of drawings made on graph paper along with three sculptures that together explore the significance of fragmented architecture and our ability of recollection.

The exhibition’s title takes its name from a 1922 poem by Wallace Stevens, which is considered a harsh didactic lesson studying the use of the metaphor of ‘coldness’; “enjoy the sweet cold before the bitter cold claims you.” Jacob relates this poem to the neoliberal attitudes dominant in Britain during the 1950s — when Margaret Thatcher was working on cost-saving methods for preserving the foamy quality of soft serve ice cream so that it could be frozen, preserved and endlessly produced. It is from within this ambivalence of something sweet and desirable yet regressively produced that this exhibition departs. (more…)

“The House of Councillor Krespel” at CAMPO

The house of Counsillor Krespel is an architectural exhibition inspired by the novel by E.T.A Hoffmann (1776-1822), a writer and composer and one of the major representatives of the German Romanticism.

In the first part of his tale, the author describes the realisation of the residence of the protagonist that doesn’t exist out of a design project, but solely by thinking though the experience of the process of its making. All of this as part of an identification process between the existence and the creation of an art work. The exhibition will showcase twenty-five artworks made by architects, originating form eleven different countries, whom have been asked to realise an original image or collage representing the strange house of councillor Krespel. “Collective Comeback” – The return of collective architecture in Amsterdam at ARCAM

Collective living and building makes a comeback in Amsterdam architecture. As in the period 1965-1985, where architects designed shared spaces and facilities on a large scale, today’s architects once again focus on collectivity. With models, drawings, films and photographs of iconic buildings, Collective Comeback mirrors the collective architecture of that time with that of today.

After the post-war reconstruction, a change in architecture took place.  Prosperity is increasing, housing needs are decreasing and the architect can focus on comfort and quality. Designers set their sights on collective architecture. The projects in the exhibition show the innovative nature of this new building ideal, such as the emphasis on ‘the meeting’ in Herman Hertzbergers Drie Hoven and involving residents in the design process of the Bickerseiland. “Faraway so close” a journey to the architecture of Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA, Bangladesh

With this first comprehensive European exhibition the Aedes Architecture Forum presents the work of Kashef Chowdhury/URBANA from Bangladesh, who received the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2016 for the Friendship Centre on the flood plains of Gaibandha in northern Bangladesh.

With further projects such as the Gulshan Society Mosque in Dhaka and the Cyclone Shelter in Kuakata, he gained widespread international acclaim. Careful arrangement of structures in areas marked by extreme climatic conditions, combined with local building techniques and materials, Kashef Chowdhury’s buildings are exemplary of an architecture that serves society with radical simplicity and poetry. With an atmospheric installation, the exhibition curated by Niklaus Graber and Andreas Ruby, invites visitors on a journey to Bangladesh and the architectural worlds of URBANA. (more…)

“The facade of The Hotel Aubecq” at Kanal Centre Pompidou Brussels

What to do with the facade of the Hotel Aubecq, one of Victor Horta’s finest achievements? Such is the question that this exhibition seeks to raise. Hôtel Aubecq is one of Victor Horta’s finest achievements, as regards both the built result and the relationship that the architect had with the client, Octave Aubecq, throughout the conception of the project.

Aubecq was authoritarian and peremptory, Horta stubborn and clever: both men hit it off wonderfully! A pure masterpiece, the curving façade of this semi-detached building presents a rather unusual structure: no longer composed of metallic girders as before, but of bluestone from Wallonia cleverly set off by grey and red granite. “Galician Life. Carme Nogueira” at CentroCentro Madrid

The memory of the place is the starting point of this exhibition dedicated to the work of Carme Nogueira (Vigo, 1970), curated by Tamara Díaz Bringas.

The artist’s new intervention evokes modulations of workspaces made by two architects of Galician origin linked to the constructive history and uses of the Palacio de Cibeles: Antonio Palacios, responsible – together with Joaquín Otamendi – for his project and construction between 1904 and 1919, and Alejandro de la Sota, who worked in the building between 1961 and 1984 as a public official of the General Post Office and undertook renovation and refurbishment works. “Stempel & Tesař: Detached Houses” at Galerie Jaroslava Fragnera Prague

Jan Stempel, a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Budapest, started his practice today in the legendary SIAL studio, led by prof. Masak and prof. Mushroom. The winning competitive design and subsequent realization of the Expo pavilion in Seville, Spain, becomes the subject of the A.D.N.S. In 2004, Ján Stempel ends his long-term partnership with the company and continues in practice on his own. (more…)

“BEHF Architects. Viennese Field Blend” at Architektur Galerie Berlin

The exhibition addresses the question of the contemporary relationship between material and identity on the basis of ten projects by BEHF. Large-scale material samples represent the carefully selected material palette, chosen according to the best Viennese traditions, that gives each of BEHF’s projects its own distinct identity.

As in many European cities, Vienna faces the challenge of striking a careful balance between history and modernity. On the one hand, the historic city centre and its famous architectural ensembles and edifices is synonymous with home for the city’s inhabitants and draws more than fifteen million tourists from across the world every year. On the other hand, Vienna continues to grow in the same manner as many other cities worldwide, where local traditions barely play a role and are predominantly replaced by interchangeable architectural projects.
