The show is part of the research in progress in Italian and European polytechnic schools, which by examining exemplary works like those of Pier Luigi Nervi has triggered a substantial rethinking of the relationships between the disciplines of engineering and architecture in the field of tools and techniques of design and construction.
“Pier Luigi Nervi, the model as a tool of design and construction”
March 14- April 28, 2017
Exhibiton space “Guido Nardi” Politecnico di Milano
Via Ampère, 2, 20133 Milano
The School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering, the Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering and the Materials Testing Lab of the Politecnico di Milano University have produced and promoted these studies in close coordination with the schools of Architecture and Engineering of the Università Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna and the Università degli Studi Roma “Tor Vergata”.
It is clear that this initiative coincides with the present reassessment of the scientific-didactic project of schools of Architecture and Engineering. In particular, it puts the focus on the themes of so-called complex design, a line of research aimed at the use and meaning of the term in the techniques of design of contemporary constructions. The three schools in this joint effort propose the convergence of aspects of research and teaching of architectural design and engineering, integrated for the field of construction.
The object of study of the section of the Politecnico di Milano University is a re-examination of the experiments conducted in the 1930s on the models of the aircraft hangars in the first and second series by Pier Luigi Nervi, at the laboratory “Prove Modelli e Costruzioni” founded by Arturo Danusso, which opened the way for experimentation with structural models. In keeping with the purpose and the disciplinary framework proposed in this initiative, it has been decided to address these experiences in terms of active reflections. Both with the reproduction of various physical models, and with the development of numerical study models, approached here as timely tools of testing and development of the project.
The section of the exhibition produced by DA (Department of Architecture), DICAM (Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental Engineering and Materials), the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Bologna, which has studied and produced the models of the football stadiums and sports complexes of Nervi, has been extensively documented in the scientific and didactic aspects in the exhibition Pier Luigi Nervi – Gli stadi per il calcio, Urban Center, Bologna, November 2014 – January 2015, and examined in the exhibition Pier Luigi Nervi – Architetture per lo Sport, February-October, MAXXI, Rome, re-presented and expanded here.
The Project SIXXI (History of Structural Engineering in Italy) of the DICII (Department of Civil and Computer Engineering) of the Università degli Studi di Roma “Tor Vergata” represents here the vast experience of studies on Nervi, with the exhibit of the “Palagioco”, the model of the worksite of the Palazzetto dello Sport in Rome, built with the “Nervi system”, and the video on his production made for the exhibition Pier Luigi Nervi, Architettura come sfida, Roma, Ingegno e costruzione, MAXXI, Rome, December 2010 – March 2011.
The exhibition thus produces, at the Milan Polytechnic, an experience of concrete reflection on themes pertinent to the schools of Engineering and Architecture. The focus of the exhibition, in fact, is on the present situation in architectural design and a better definition of its objectives of research and teaching, for the essential change of university training now in progress.
